California Golden Bears vs Nevada Wolf Pack: ESPN Friday Night Pick
September 16, 2010 by luckylester · Leave a Comment
California Golden Bears vs Nevada Wolf Pack: ESPN Friday Night Pick: Oh this is a very tough decision that I made, but I’m sticking with it. Little Nevada is just a measly 3 point underdog to mighty Cal and Jeff Tedford’s amazing offense. I guess I’m only worried because it’s early in the season and Tedford’s group of Cal Bears hasn’t called it quits quite yet. No harm intended on the players, but is there any team that disappoints in the 2nd half of the season more than Cal? Well I think that’s because they usually play little easy teams early and gain some unwarranted publicity with a decent win over a decent opponent.
Well, this Nevada Wolf Pack team may not be well known in all corners of the globe, but right here in this chair I’ve seen plenty to like about what the Wolf Pack brings to the table.
I would like to pre-warn you and let you know that every single expert (all 9 that have picked this game) have taken the California Golden Bears to win on the road against the Wolf Pack. What they failed to realize is that just because you’re in the Pac 10 it doesn’t make you automatically better than a team from a puny division like Nevada.
The Bears can score a bunch of points against nothing opponents, and a lot of points will be scored by them against Nevada – but the Wolf Pack playing at home are no joke, and they have an offense and a playmaker every bit as good if not better than what Cal has to flaunt. Colin Kaepernick is one of the best college football players in the Nation – and quite honestly, I don’t know what Cal brings to the game that suggests they can stop this guy. I think Colin does work against the Pac 10′s Cal squad, and they win by double digits at home.

Kansas Jayhawks @ Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles: Friday Night Pick
September 16, 2010 by luckylester · Leave a Comment
Kansas Jayhawks @ Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles: Friday Night Pick: I know what you’re thinking in this one… The Kansas Jayhawks have turned around a slow start and now they’re beating teams like Georgia Tech. Maybe they are much better than everyone expected them to be. They had a 100-yard rusher against the Yellow Jackets (James Sims) and freshman quarterback Jordan Webb threw three touchdown passes – they are back.
Slow down! The Jayhawks just beat the Yellow Jackets here, it’s not like they beat a good team out of the ACC. If anything the ACC has taught me over the years it’s this – no matter how solid an ACC team is, no matter how well they run, throw, play defense, they can lose randomly to any pile of helmets and shoulder pads in the nation. So while I have to give Kansas credit for pulling through and upsetting the ranked Yellow Jackets, I can’t change my view of the Jayhawks on that one common ACC malfunction.
Southern Miss, on the other hand, is very much underrated. They put up a lot of yards on a very good South Carolina defense, out passing the Gamecocks by 100+ yards in that game. It was closer than the finals score insists, and this is a good Golden Eagles team. They are at home on Thursday Night and that’s a big advantage – but it comes down to Southern Miss just being a lot better in most facets of the game.
Kansas Jayhawks @ Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles (-5.5)
Houston Texans VS Washington Redskins: Free NFL Pick & Preview
September 16, 2010 by luckylester · Leave a Comment
Houston Texans VS Washington Redskins: Free NFL Pick & Preview: I have it on good authority that the Texans will take a firm step back to reality this week in Washington – okay, the authority isn’t really there, but I certainly believe that. Why? Because I play sports, have played them for a long time, have watched them for even longer, and have written thousands and thousands of pages about them in the last handful of years. Arian Foster isn’t going to approach 200 yards anytime soon, and the Texans secondary isn’t going to come up with big stop after big stop against every team they play – they just aren’t that good.
Houston is going to give the Redskins trouble, no doubt, they wouldn’t be favored unless they were expected to win – but it’s not just about the team on the field, and this is one of those times where there are more things to be considered than what Houston finally did at home against a team they’d beaten one time in 16 chances. This is about the AC Texans (After Colts) and how they handle their new title against a Washington team that played pretty damned tough last week against a pretty good football team from Dallas.
The Redskins may have to deal with the same thing, beating Dallas was a big thing for Mike Shananhan’s first game with his new team. However, this is a team full of experienced vets (like Donovan McNabb) that have done plenty of winning in their collective pasts. I think they play better this week, at home again, in front of a crowd that is starting to buzz a little about their Redskins.

Papas Picks: 5 Underdog Growlers in NFL Free Predictions
September 16, 2010 by Papa Weimer · Leave a Comment
I didn’t dominate in Week 1, that’s for sure, the dogs didn’t have enough bite to make me a winner but I snagged two underdogs from the pound while three got away from me. I still have game, a master plan, and if I can get my mind around that damned Cruella Deville I’ll find all the dogs!!! Okay, so that’s a little overboard, but I’m borderline too old to be thinking of witty stuff, so give me a break. The Ravens and Texans pulled off my two upsets in Week 1, while the Panthers, Eagles, and Raiders fell short. I could argue that the Eagles didn’t stand a chance when their starting QB went down with a concussion, but that’d be a lie, Mike Vick instantly made that team better. Here’s what I see in Week 2 sports betting action. PS – I titled this article, “Underdog Growlers” – this is great!
Week 2 Free Picks
Pittsburgh Steelers (+5) @ Tennessee Titans: I guess I don’t get it. I’d say this one is at least 50-50 as to who should win, and one team is getting five points – shoot, sounds like a good deal, I’ll wheel, I’ll deal, hell, I’ll just take it. The Steelers can win without Ben – shoot, “Win without Ben in 2010″ sounds like a hell of a slogan, I should get paid for this crap!
Buffalo Bills (+13.5) @ Green Bay Packers: Yeah, yeah, yeah- the Packers are awesome, they’re going to a Super Bowl, don’t worry about their stud RB out for the season, their back up will be even better… blah, blah, blah. The Packers have always thrown too much and not run enough, they play one of the best young secondaries in the league – I say this is a match made in heaven for the Bills at +13.5, seems like an easy low-scoring cover to me. I wish I had real steel huevos, I’d take the Bills +450
Miami Dolphins (+6) @ Minnesota Vikings: Hey, they stop the run really well, they can run against anyone, and the Brett Favre show is still in park. I like 6 points in another low-scoring affair – that Dolphins defense is better than we all think. I mean, better than you think – what I think is what is right. Trout!!!
Chicago Bears (+8.5) @ Dallas Cowboys: The Cowboys haven’t clicked offensively yet this year, and that includes in the pre-season. Their offensive line is struggling, and while I don’t trust Mike Martz with baby powder, I do think the Bears defense is good enough to limit the Cowboys’ scoring chances. 14-17 points won’t cover this game for Dallas.
San Francisco 49ers (+5.5) @ HOME vs. New Orleans Saints: Hey, I’m not ready to give up on the 49ers just yet. Last year, they played their toughest games against the toughest opponents, and I think they have a real good shot to upset Drew Brees and the Saints in San Fran this week. After last week, they will come out firing on all cylinders.
Top 5 NFL Picks: Week 2 NFL Betting Predictions
September 16, 2010 by Josh Arsenault · Leave a Comment
Okay, one week in the books and there you see my bankroll is beginning to delete itself into the vast money pits of the sportsbook. Not to worry, one week of losing can only be made better by lessening my cash at risk in Week 2 and upping my possible winnings… You know what that means, Parlay City, baby!!! But before that, here’s a look at my record and last week’s action.
Starting Account Total: $1000
At Risk: $300 to Win $870
Money Left: $795-$300 on the line
Total W/L Last Week: (1-3-1)
Season W/L Record: (1-3-1)
Week 1 Picks Review
Carolina Panthers (+7) @ N.Y. Giants (Risk $100 to Win $92)(LOSE $100)
San Francisco (-3) @ Seattle Seahawks (Risk $100 to Win $95) (LOSE $100)
Green Bay Packers (-3) @ Philadelphia Eagles (Risk $100 to Win $95) (WIN $$95)
Indianapolis Colts (-2.5) @ Houston Texans (Risk $100 to Win $92) (LOSE $100)
Minnesota Vikings @ New Orleans Saints (-5) (Risk $100 to Win $92) (PUSH)
Remember, You can also keep track of me on TWITTER @AlaskanArse. I’ll update my thoughts on games, my picks and fantasy alike. Here’s a link to Week 1′s article if you need a little more explanation.
Here are Week 2′s picks and bets.
St. Louis Rams (+165) to win @ Oakland Raiders: (Risk $100 to Win $165) I like my chances with Sam Bradford, a solid rushing attack, and an Oakland defense that is coming off a beat down at the hands of the Tennessee Titans. Maybe you wouldn’t put your money in the hands of a rookie, but I’m liking what I’m seeing from the Oklahoma product, even with those 3 interceptions he tossed in Week 1.
Kansas City Chiefs (+105) to win @ Cleveland Browns: (Risk $100 to win $105) I just can’t trust a team is trying to win if they give their best offensive weapon 8 carries and some great white hype former linebacker turned full back turned halfback 9 carries. Oh, and that wouldn’t be that bad if they weren’t successful doing it but still went to Jake Delhomme for the game loser. If Delhomme doesn’t play it will help the Browns, but it won’t help their play calling. I like the Chiefs to get a couple big-play scores and oust the Browns in Cleveland.
PARLAY ALERT!!!
Indianapolis Colts (-5) @ home VS New York Giants:
Minnesota Vikings (-5.5) @ home VS Miami Dolphins:
Green Bay Packers (-12.5) @ home VS Buffalo Bills:
(Risk $100 to win $600)
What can I say except I like all these teams to win big at home. The Colts and Vikings aren’t in the business of being 0-2, and despite what Lucky thinks about the Bills being a good match-up for the Packers offense, I don’t buy it, I think Aaron Rodgers goes off and passes right through that defense. So maybe I’m going for the big one, so what, I like my picks and three great teams to cover three spreads in the same week early in the year seems like a good enough chance for the girl I go with. Go me!!!
Week 2 Fantasy Football Rankings: Fantasy Focus Week 2 2010
September 16, 2010 by luckylester · Leave a Comment
Alright, already in Week 1 I took home the Week’s top prize, it’s not staged, folks, I’m just that good! Okay, okay, I share Week 1′s title with a red-head physical education teacher that just so happens to be a pitcher (kind of a loony group of characters). This week I plan on taking the title all to myself, one of the few selfish acts I’ll attempt! On with the show!
If you are new to LuckyLester.com’s Fantasy Focus, this is how it works…
Every week I’ll list a plethora of starting options categorized into four groups; Elite Starters, Solid Starters, Sleeper Starters, and now Super Sleeper Starters. I’ll list my top 5 at each spot. The titles speak for themselves. Also, I have 5 guys I’d bench – and these aren’t normally terrible players.
At the end of the article, the LuckyLester staff will list their Top 5 players at each position (sans kicker, because, well, we don’t rank kickers – we have better things to do like shoot spit-wads at cars through our window. Yep.
Focus up now, here we go!
Elite Starters: Guys picked early that I love this week, looking for Top 5 at their position.
- Drew Brees – The 49ers have a very good run D, but Drew throws the ball okay.
- Rashard Mendenhall– The Titans have trouble stopping the run, and you know the Steelers are going to feed it to Mendenhall who ran tough last week.
- Chris Johnson – I can’t leave him out of my Top 5, not matter who he’s playing against.
- Andre Johnson– AJ is a beast, and with a new found focus on stopping Foster, he should benefit in Week 2.
- Phillip Rivers – The fiery one looked better late, last week, I think he looks good early here.
Solid Starters: Guys picked in middle rounds that should outplay their ranking/draft position this week.
- Ahmad Bradshaw – Should have plenty of room against a Bob Sanders-less Colts D.
- LeSean McCoy– Should find room on the ground and in the air against Detroit.
- Santana Moss – Didn’t go off last week, but this time around against Houston? Yep.
- Jabar Gaffney – Eddie Royal could be out which means more targets for Gaffney.
- Mike Vick– If he starts, I think he will, I couldn’t pick 7 guys I’d rather have in than him.
Sleeper Starters: Guys ranked low, drafted low or not at all, but I still like them this week…
- Mike Williams (TB) –Both Mikes played well, flashed talent, and had an overall solid week -but this kid looks special.
- Laurent Robinson – Mark Clayton had a lot of looks last week, but I think Robinson even’s it out, and is a better red-zone target than Clayton, and Nnamdi might get Mark.
- Jeremy Maclin– He’s too fast and the Lions secondary will let him get deep – Mike Vick has a cannon and he’s going to use is a couple times this week.
- Justin Forsett– They have to give him at least 12 carries this week… Right? Pete, c’mon!
- Michael Bush– McFadden was great last week, but Bush is still the best back in Oakland – and he’s back in Week 2.
Super Sleepers: Undrafted guys that are usually unowned, but in a pinch put ‘em in coach!
- Fred Taylor – Tough match-up, old guy, but the Patriots have a way of getting him 70-80 yards, mostly via tom-foolery.
- Mark Sanchez– Laugh if you want, but after all the “check down” talk – I think Sanchez takes a few chances this week and finishes in the Top 16 amongst QBs.
- Josh Freeman – He’s just a 2nd year guy, but Carolina’s defense looked like it had no pass rush, and that’s good for any QB.
- Legedu Naanee – He didn’t look good early, but Phillip looked to him late. Good sign.
- Jacoby Jones- Too fast, and I’m telling you, the running game will help the deep threats.
Sit ‘Em Son: I don’t care where they were drafted, I don’t like these guys starting this week…
- Donald Driver– A mainstay off this list for years, Driver will have his hands full against Buffalo’s secondary.
- Pierre Thomas– I don’t think the Saints will run more than 10 times, and I don’t think Thomas will get all those carries, and I don’t think he’ll do much with the ones he gets.
- Knowshon Moreno – I think the Hawks run-D is for real. Not sure about their offense.
- Cedric Benson– Just the up in pass plays takes away from Benson a bit, and the Ravens D-front says no way Jose.
- Jay Cutler– This is a tough chance I’m taking, because as much as he’ll throw he could be okay fantasy-wise without a good game – but I say he finishes out of the Top 15 this week -the pass rush is too tough!
***Week two, without further ado, pee or poo, our picks for you! Elephant.***

2010 Fantasy Focus REVIEW: Week 1
September 16, 2010 by luckylester · Leave a Comment
Alright, not many things went as I had hoped, I dropped the ball but plan on picking it up next week. Like all my musings, I back them up with reviews, take credit and shame for right and wrong. Here’s Week 1′s Fantasy Review. For those that don’t know, I give you a quick review of said players’ week and then grade myself (sometimes too harsh? sometimes too well? – let me know) – enjoy!
Elite Starters: Guys picked early that I love this week, looking for Top 5 at their position.
- Frank Gore – The Seahawks held Gore in check, but 6 catches made him the #15 RB in Week 1. C-
- Chris Johnson– CJ was 3rd amongst RBs, going for 30 fantasy points against the Raiders. A
- Jay Cutler – 24 fantasy points, lots of yards, #4 QB in Week 1. A
- Adrian Peterson – AP was ignored by his own team in the 2nd half, he managed 18th amongst RBs. C-
- Philip Rivers – 1 fewer point than Cutler and was tied for 5th amongst QBs. A
Solid Starters: Guys picked in middle rounds that should outplay their ranking/draft position this week.
- Jerome Harrison –I have no idea what was going on with James’ touches. Man-jina gets me again. D
- Carnell Williams– Caddy was 20th, not too shabby, ahead of where he was picked, but medium warm. C+
- Santana Moss – 24th WR this week, I think he gets better and better when McNabb figures out the Washington offense. C+
- Antonio Gates – “14 catches 170+ yards and 2 touchdowns against KC last year” – he was right on par, grabbing 5 for 76 yards and a touchdown, solid for the big hooper. A-
- Johnny Knox – 45th receiver overall, not as good a day as I had hoped from the #1 in Chicago. Aromashodu had more targets than Knox D+
Sleeper Starters: Guys ranked low, drafted low or not at all, but I still like them this week…
- Alex Smith –There were 29 QBs better than Smith in Week 1, the Hawks got him. F
- Laurent Robinson – 40th receiver, outplayed and targeted by Mark Clayton, interesting. C+
- Nate Burleson– Nate did little to none, closer to none. F
- Mike Wiliams (TB)– 20th WR overall, if you watched the game you saw why people think highly of him. B
- Josh Cribbs– 61st WR this week, not worth starting – missed this one. D-
Super Sleepers: Undrafted guys that are usually unowned, but in a pinch put ‘em in coach!
- Mike Williams (SEA) – 40th amongst WRs with 10 fantasy points, actually should have gotten credit for a score but the Hawks ran to the line and ran it in. B
- Darren McFadden– McFadden looked as good as I’ve seen him since college. 4th RB in Week 1. A+
- Trent Edwards – Trent was 18th amongst QBs, not bad, a couple points off what I hoped. B
- Anthony Gonzalez – Austin Collie, yes, Anthony Gonzalez, no. If AG got half the yards Collie did, he would have gotten a nice grade here. Too bad for me. F
- Leon Washington – The King of Leon went for 12 yards on 6 carries, as Julius Jones led the Hawks in carries. F
Sit ‘Em Son: I don’t care where they were drafted, I don’t like these guys starting this week…
- TJ Houshmandzadeh– 1 catch for 27 yards, drew a big PI penalty that gave the Ravens their only TD, but in fantasy you don’t get rewarded for that. A+
- Brandon Marshall– Finished 25th amongst WRs, but it was all catches, 8 for around 55 yards. B
- Joseph Addai – He finished with 44 yards rushing, 6 catches for 28 yards receiving. Was I right? B+
- Eli Manning– Eli was 8th overall amongst QBs, but he had a really solid day, finishing a couple points out of 3rd or 4th. I was wrong. and I was right, I would regret this one. F
- Michael Turner– 19 carries, 42 yards – 1 catch, 7 yards. You’re welcome! A+
***First Week! Opening Day! Fantasy Week 1! Yahooooo!!! Here are OUR picks!***
Below are our Rankings for Week 1. Every week we tally up the total rankings amongst each position and the lowest totals take that position. For example, if I pick the Top 5 running backs on Sunday, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 – then my total score for RBs will be 15, and I will have won. Unless one of the other guys also picked the Top 5 and their #1 guy was ranked higher than mine. Make sense? Then you get a point total based on your finish for each positions (for example, I was 1st in QBs, 1st in RBs, 2nd in WRs, and 3rd in both TEs and DSTs – I finished tied for first with the Red Bag. Easy enough to follow? Here are the totals.

Who did we miss?
QBs -The only surprise player in the Top 5 was Michael Vick. Yes, that Mike Vick. The former Falcon franchise player was running and throwing like it was 2005 or 2006, or whenever he was at his best. He ran for a score and passed for one as well, tallying 100 on the ground and 175 through the air – all in a little less than 3 quarters of work. QB controversy?
RBs – Arian Foster wasn’t only fantasy football’s darling of Week 1, but regular football too. The Texans let Foster’s feet carry them to only their second victory over the Indianapolis Colts since they became a team quite a few years ago. Foster busted over 200 yards of rushing like it was no big deal. Matt Forte didn’t rush for much, or that effectively, but he sure found ways to contribute. He took a screen pass for a 70+ yard touchdown and caught a nice back shoulder ball in the end zone for a 30+ yard TD catch to boot. Darren McFadden and Jahvid Best helped fill out a Top 6 that included just two guys we picked, Chris Johnson and Rashard Mendenhall.
WRs- The only Top 7 WRs that were picked were Miles Austin and Roddy White. The other 5, in order, were Austin Collie, Chan Ochocinco, Hakeem Nicks, Wes Welker, and Legedu Neanee. Collie got some great garbage time stats, as did Ocho. Nicks decided he’d make the most of his receptions and turned 4 grabs into 3 touchdowns. Wes Welker caught a couple TDs on his way to a solid comeback game while Legedu made the biggest jump from Vincent Jackson’s suspension/hold out.
TEs- Marcedes Lewis finished 3rd, and while most of us thought he was perfectly capable of catching two balls for 32 yards, we certainly didn’t expect both of them to be touchdowns. Don’t get carried away with his stats!
DSTs- Nobody took the Giants, but what were we thinking? Everyone knows John Fox loves calling the interception play whenever the running game is working flawlessly. Nobody took the Seahawks, in fact, I thought the 49ers were a lock to beat the Pe-Hawks – silly me, silly us! The Patriots also came in at a tie for 4th, and nobody picked them to do work, either.
