Georgetown Hoyas VS West Virginia Mountaineers: Basketball Picks
March 1, 2010 by luckylester
Georgetown Hoyas (+6) @ West Virginia MountaineersĀ (7:00pm ET, 3-1 – ESPN): After a pretty hot start, the Hoyas have kind of stumbled down the stretch, losing 5 of their last 9 games and falling right out of the Top 10. They did lost to Syracuse twice, and most recently a surging Notre Dame squad, but losses to Rutgers and South Florida (though both are pretty solid and underrated) aren’t considered moral wins. Georgetown is built to compete for a 1-seed, but their recent slide in Big East play has eliminated that from the realm of possibility. But hey, the Big East is tough.
West Virginia has struggled of late also. They’ve lost 3 of their last 6 games, but unlike Georgetown, all three of the Mountaineers’ losses came against NCAA Tournament teams, Pittsburgh (@ Pitt and in OT), Villanova, and the recently powerful Connecticut Huskies. The Mountaineers haven’t beaten a ranked team since the 3rd of February, almost a month ago. Most recently, the Mounties beat Cincinnati in West Virginia, losing against the spread in the process. They are just 2-4 ATS over their last 6, and 11-16 ATS on the season. The Mountaineers are 12-2 at home, though.
Georgetown isn’t playing very well, but I’m not completely enamored with the Mountaineers of late, either – and Georgetown has the better team. The Hoyas really need to turn it around quick if they want to get some momentum going into their Big East version of the Sweet 16… They’ve been okay away from home, going 8-4 on the road and at neutral sites so far this season. Despite the Hoyas being 10-24 ATS in their last 34 games against the Big East, I’m taking them here. I think they get the win outright, but a much better bet is those 6 points on my side, the Hoyas play lots of close games.
